Veterinary Podiatry Day – Brindabella Equine

Veterinary Podiatry Day
27th of June 2017
Motion Equine Podiatry Consulting in collaboration with Brindabella Equine Mobile Veterinary Services will be providing a Veterinary Podiatry Day for the horses of Canberra and surrounds. The day will be held at Brindabella Equine’s veterinary facility in Murrumbateman, NSW on the 27th of June 2017
Dr Luke Wells-Smith is a veterinary podiatrist that has worked in the equine industry for the past 12 years. He works alongside farriers, veterinarians and other health care providers to diagnose and manage horses with foot related lameness issues. Luke provides a consulting service to most major horse areas along the east coast and is developing an online consultation portal.
Foot problems are a major cause of lameness in the horse. Types of foot related lameness conditions include; laminitis, caudal heel pain, osteoarthritis of the coffin and pastern joints (i.e. ringbone), seedy toe, and mismatched foot conformation. Also, soft tissue injuries within the foot can be a cause of lameness such as the deep digital flexor tendon and the navicular suspensory apparatus.
Luke will assess each case, while Brindabella Equine will provide diagnostic support. In many cases of foot related lameness, x-rays allow us to look inside the foot. This can help the farrier and veterinarian see the pedal bone, navicular bone and short pastern bone. How these bones sit within the hoof capsule are important in terms of lameness diagnosis and ongoing management.
The diagnosis will determine the ongoing treatment and management plan. There are many different types of therapeutic shoes on the market which can utilised for the treatment of foot related cases.
